چکیده

Introduction Blood as well as other normal tissues are unavoidably exposed to ionising radiation during a radiation therapy of tumours. Damage to haematopoietic cells in cancer patients undergoing radiation therapy is one of the important side effects and might result in secondary malignancies of the haematopoietic system. Genomic instability induced during radiation therapy might play a role in responses of tumour and of normal tissues located in the treatment volume or in its close proximity. Since the radiation-induced genomic instability in normal tissues including haematopoietic system could significantly increase the risk of secondary malignancies, the potential of heavy ions with respect to instability induction must be addressed.

Increased effectiveness of carbon ions in the production of reactive oxygen species in normal human fibroblasts

The production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), especially superoxide anions (O2 (·-)), is enhanced in many normal and tumor cell types in response to ionizing radiation. The influence of ionizing radiation on the regulation of ROS production is considered as an important factor in the long-term effects of irradiation (such as genomic instability) that might contribute to the development of se...

Modification of 10 cGy neutron or gamma-rays induced chromosomal damages by hyperthermia: an in vitro study

Background: To evaluate the effects of hyperthermia (HT) on the frequency of chromosomal aberrations induced by a low dose of neutron or γ-rays in human peripheral blood lymphocytes. Materials and Methods: Blood samples were exposed to HT (41.5°C for 30 and 60min, 43°C for 15 and 30min), 10 cGy neutron or γ-rays, HT + neutron/γ, and neutron/γ + HT. After standard cell culture, harvestin...

Induction of cancer stem-like cells in A549 cells after exposure to carbon ions and X-rays

Background: Cancer stem-like cells (CSCs) play a crucial role in the initiation, progression, and recurrence of cancer. Evidence indicates that the high linear energy transfer (LET) carbon ion beam is more effective against CSCs than the conventional X-ray beam. Carbon ion radiotherapy is considered as a promising cancer strategy, however, information about whether, or not, new CSCs are induced...

Relative biological effectiveness of carbon ions for causing fatal liver failure after partial hepatectomy in mice.

To evaluate the acute phase damage to liver by carbon ions, BALB/c mice were irradiated with carbon ions or X-rays after two-thirds partial hepatectomy, and their survival was followed. The 50% lethal dose within 60 days (LD50/60) was 42.2 +/- 0.25 Gy (standard error) for X-rays, and 22.7 +/- 0.25 Gy for carbon ions. The relative biological effectiveness (RBE) of carbon ions was 1.86 (95% confi...

Radioprotective effects of selenium and vitamin-E against 6MV X-rays in human blood lymphocytes by micronucleus assay

Background: Critical macromolecules of cells such as DNA are in exposure to damage of free radicals that induced from the interaction of ionizing radiation with biological systems. Selenium and vitamin-E are natural compounds that have been shown to be a direct free radical scavenger. The aim of this study was to investigate the radioprotective effect of selenium and vitamin-E separately and sy...
